Rockers II

1. How does the main character, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, compare to the other main characters (Ivan Martin and Derrick Thompson) in the first two films we saw?

I think Leroy and Derrick are decent human beings, the first one, yes he was technically a criminal for robbing and all, but he was sort of a Robin Hood character, so in a way he means well. Derrick was a teenager who has trying to become a professional wrestler that got caught in a conflict bigger than him. Ivan Martin was a straight up bad person, he was selfish and went around shooting people, I didn't enjoy his time on screen.

2. Did you like or dislike the film? Why/Why Not?

I didn't like the film that much, even though I don't necessarily hate it, I'm definitely more inclined to not liking it to be more clear. I wouldn't watch it again because I never really could engaged with whatever that was happening on screen, it just kind of passed by. Although I really liked the sequence when the robbed that house, but that's about it.

3. In conclusion to our Jamaican film unit, which was your favorite film of all 3? Why?

I didn't like any of the films that we watched for class honestly, so picking a favorite is basically choosing which one I disliked the least. Even though, The Harder They Come and Ghett'a Life had redeeming elements, like the soundtrack and the storyline of the lead character with his career and family, respectively, I'd choose Rockers as my favorite mainly because I have a scene stucked in my head that I remember very clearly, the one when the robbed the house. I think it was really beautifully done, very cinematic and pleasing to watch.

Jamaica Arise: The 75 year history of the PNP (1938-2013)

1. What was the role that the People's National Party (PNP) played in the anti-colonial struggle? The People's National Party was instrumental in the path of liberation from Great Britain. It was the first, and the most important, political movements whose main goal was freeing of the colonialist claws. It was fundamental for Jamaican to be released of UK's grip so the oppression would end. Following the example of Marcus Garvey, the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, the PNP was able to ensure voting rights for every adult, whether they were a man or a woman. 2. What was/is the role of women throughout the 75 years of the PNP? (Give at least 3 examples) There were a considerable amount of women part of this political party whose work and influence was helpful in the improvement of Jamaica. One of the changes that make women's life in Jamaica better can be traced back to the passing of important bills like the Mat...

The Pain Tree

1. My favorite character from "The Pain Tree" is Larissa because she embodies a raw and difficult reality of so many women who had suffered due to the oppressive regimes that oblige them to take a job raising someone else's kid and leave their own children. She definitely is a tragic figure that I can't help but to be moved by her hardships. Larissa is a black woman from a working class background that lived in the house of her bosses. A parallel that can be made with Michelle Cliff's essay is that both narrate the difficulties of being a black woman in an oppressive white dominated country. 2. It could be because there's some fear lying within Lorraine's mother that her hegemony can end. If the oppression of the black population ends, she and her class will loose their privilege. That would be a considerable change of the class establishment of Jamaica. 3. "The Pain Tree" is a tree that's filled with nails that represents the sorrow of ...

The Harder They Come

1. My favorite aspect of the film “The Harder They Come” is the music business’ storyline. I enjoyed watching the inside scoop of the industry, how producers work, the difficulties of launching a career in the business, etc. Even though it’s not the main focus of the movie, it’s an important sub-plot and that can be assessed with how notorious and famous the soundtrack of the film became. Nevertheless I didn’t like how violent the movie is. Maybe it’s a faithful depiction of the life in Jamaica in the 70’s, but some scenes were hard to watch due it’s graphic nature. I actually cover my eyes or looked away during these scenes. 2. It’s difficult to choose because no one really caught my eye or interested me that much, but if I ha d to pick one I’d go with Elsa. Almost every time I watch a film or a TV show, my favorite character is a woman because I think they are more fascinating to watch than their male counterpart. But then again, there was nothing really ...
