Ghett'a Life II

1. Who was your favorite character (s) from the film? Why?


My favorite character is Dawn Thompson, Derrick's mother, because she was always really supportive of her son and all of his career endeavors. Dawn was a very present figure for her son and wasn't afraid of standing up against her husband. She was the most compelling character to watch, not only as mother, but as a woman in an oppressive culture.


2. How do we see the political conflict portrayed in the film?

The conflict between two political parties was heavily portrayed in the film. Derrick's family was a member of the People's National Party and the gym where he worked out and trained to be a boxer was owned by people who was a member of the Jamaicain Labour Party, the opposite party.

That's the reason why his life as a boxer was always in conflict with his family life, the beliefs were just so different, polar opposites. Besides, the movie is set in a year that was going to hold an election, so the violence and polarization was even more heightened.

3. How are woman portrayed in this film? Is it a little or big advancement compared to The Harder They Come?


In comparison to The Harder They Come, the female characters were better developed and had a stronger presence within the story. Dawn Thompson had more screen time than Elsa, the most important female character from The Harder They Come. Even though, Dawn was a more fleshed out character, she wasn't the protagonist, the movies was still about the men in her life and not specifficaly about her.

Another example of the female portrayal in Ghett'a Life is Camille, she's only the romantic interest of the lead character and nothing else. Everything was still about the guys in the film.

    I also would liked to see more of Dawn on her own storyline and not only supporting the male cast

    I agree with you about the female characters, they just participate because of Derrick, a male character. It is like they don´t have anything else! That´s wrong !

The Pain Tree

1. My favorite character from "The Pain Tree" is Larissa because she embodies a raw and difficult reality of so many women who had suffered due to the oppressive regimes that oblige them to take a job raising someone else's kid and leave their own children. She definitely is a tragic figure that I can't help but to be moved by her hardships. Larissa is a black woman from a working class background that lived in the house of her bosses. A parallel that can be made with Michelle Cliff's essay is that both narrate the difficulties of being a black woman in an oppressive white dominated country. 2. It could be because there's some fear lying within Lorraine's mother that her hegemony can end. If the oppression of the black population ends, she and her class will loose their privilege. The Harder They Come

1. My favorite aspect of the film “The Harder They Come” is the music business’ storyline. I enjoyed watching the inside scoop of the industry, how producers work, the difficulties of launching a career in the business, etc. Even though it’s not the main focus of the movie, it’s an important sub-plot and that can be assessed with how notorious and famous the soundtrack of the film became. Nevertheless I didn’t like how violent the movie is. Maybe it’s a faithful depiction of the life in Jamaica in the 70’s, but some scenes were hard to watch due it’s graphic nature. I actually cover my eyes or looked away during these scenes. 2. It’s difficult to choose because no one really caught my eye or interested me that much, but if I ha d to pick one I’d go with Elsa. Almost every time I watch a film or a TV show, my favorite character is a woman because I think they are more fascinating to watch than their male counterpart.
